We are a cello group programme for cello students learning with the Suzuki Method, supporting and complementing the work already being done in their individual lessons with a registered Suzuki teacher.

Junior programme: “Cello Kittens”: 9 – 10.05am + option to observe later morning group sessions

This is aimed at new beginners, and at children in their first couple of years of learning.

  • 30 minute group cello lesson with Helen Neilson, covering Suzuki repertoire and some additional fun pieces. Games and exercises form part of our work to make the sessions fun and engaging for young learners.
  • 20 minute musicianship lesson, covering various elements including body percussion and singing.
  • 15 minute Playtogether session with cellists of all levels, allowing them to learn from hearing and being with the more advanced students.
  • OPTION to observe other morning group sessions
  • OPTION to join 15 minute break time to mix with the other families is open to all.

Intermediate programme: “Cello Cubs”: 9.00 – 11.40am CORE or 9am – 12.30pm with ENSEMBLE

  • 40 minute group cello lesson with Helen Neilson, covering Suzuki repertoire from approximately books 2-4 and some wider supporting repertoire appropriate to their level.
  • 40 minute musicianship lesson, covering elements including body percussion, singing and some basics of introduction to notation.
  • 25 minute Playtogether session with cellists of all levels, allowing them to learn from hearing and being with the more advanced students.
  • 15 minute break time to mix with the other families is open to all.
  • OPTION to join 40 minute cello ensemble session, developing reading and ensemble sessions. A great advantage of learning ensemble skills in a cello ensemble is that they learn to play tunes, middle parts and bass lines – all skills that advanced level orchestral cellists need! Option to join this is given by the teacher, when they feel the child is ready for it.

  • 25 minute Playtogether session with cellists of all levels, allowing them to learn from hearing and being with all the other students.

  • 15 minute break time to mix with the other families is open to all.
  • 45 minute cello ensemble session, developing reading and ensemble sessions. A great advantage of learning ensemble skills in a cello ensemble is that they learn to play tunes, middle parts and bass lines – all skills that advanced level orchestral cellists need!
  • Cellists learning on other pathways beyond the Suzuki Method may be considered for the Advanced programme only. Please contact Helen directly to discuss your individual case and reasons for wanting to join. There will be an expectation of preparation of set repertoire in advance of each term.
